Safe Routes to School
Program
Wellesley Public Schools participate in the Safe Routes to School program, organized by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. This program promotes safe biking and walking practices among elementary, middle, and high school students through a collaborative, community-focused approach that integrates health and transportation. Safe Routes to School operates on the principles of the six E’s: Education, Encouragement, Engagement, Evaluation, Engineering, and Equity.
Hunnewell Walk To School
The Hunnewell Walk-to-School Coordinator(s) work closely with the PE teacher to encourage walking, biking, or rolling to school from October through June. This initiative promotes physical activity, reduces traffic congestion and pollution around schools, helps students develop essential pedestrian safety skills, and fosters a sense of community by encouraging families to walk together and creating opportunities for social interaction among students and parents on their way to school. Overall, the Walk to School program supports healthier lifestyles, safer streets, and stronger community connections.
Crossing Guard
A crossing guard from the Wellesley Police Department is stationed at the Grove Street crosswalk at the Hampden Street intersection. There is currently an open position for a crossing guard at the Hampden and Cameron Street intersection. If you’re interested in applying, please email jobs@wellesleyma.gov.
The placement of crossing guards is prioritized to minimize potential conflicts between vehicles and students who are unaccompanied by an adult. Regular crossing guard hours are from 7:55-8:25 AM for arrival and from 3:05-3:35 PM for dismissal. Click here for tips on safe crossing practices.
